Anyone living or working in Gazimağusa would be well advised to make a few preparations for tomorrow, Tuesday 20th October, as a considerable part of the district is scheduled to be without electricity for approximately six hours.

The Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (Kıb-Tek) has announced that maintenance and repair work on the medium-voltage electricity network will require supplies to be interrupted between 09:00 and approximately 15:00.

And looking at the list of affected areas, this is certainly not a small, localised interruption.

Which areas will be affected?

The announced interruption covers a substantial part of Gazimağusa, including residential neighbourhoods, schools, commercial premises and public buildings.

The following locations are included in Kıb-Tek's announcement:

Central Gazimağusa: Karakeşliler, Menekşeli, the old hospital, Courts, Tax Office, Fire Station, Port Authority, military shipyard, old city (Suriçi), Open Market, Ulu Cami, Belça, Veyselliler and Kombos Square.

Coastal and Maraş areas: Palm Beach, Laguna, Portofino Hotel, the area between Palm Beach and Anıt Roundabout, Derinya, the Derinya crossing point, enclosed Maraş, Ordu Evi, Deniz Evi and Maraş Health Centre.

Schools: Vocational High School, Canbulat Secondary School, Şehit Zeki Salih Primary School and Namık Kemal High School.

Other residential and commercial areas: Altıok, Serap Çorap, Baykal (part), İlarma, Harika Mahallesi, Maksim, Antalyalılar, Beşevler, Çanakkale, Ayluga, Unifin Sitesi, Derinya migrant housing area and parts of the small industrial district.

The announcement also names areas around Harnup Factory, Döveç Wedding Hall, Dima, Şadan Hotel, Canova Petrol, Ece Flour Factory, the potato warehouses, pipe factory, demolished church, Kelmen and Gazioğlu dairy farms.

The 2.5-mile road towards the Akyar crossing, adjoining greenhouse areas and several locations near the border are also included.

What precautions should residents take?

Six hours without electricity can be particularly inconvenient for businesses, households with refrigerated medicines and anyone depending on electrically powered medical equipment.

Charge mobile phones, laptops and rechargeable lighting beforehand. If you depend on medical equipment, arrange a reliable backup power supply rather than assuming electricity will return at precisely 15:00.

Avoid repeatedly opening refrigerators and freezers. Computers, televisions and other sensitive equipment may also benefit from being disconnected during the interruption.

Will electricity return at 15:00?

Kıb-Tek describes 15:00 as the approximate restoration time, so residents should allow for the possibility that work may finish earlier or later.

The sensible approach is to treat electrical installations as potentially live throughout the maintenance period.

The notice concerns planned maintenance, not an unexpected network failure. Anyone in the affected areas should make arrangements before Tuesday morning.

Sources and references

www.kibrispostasi.com

kayitkibris.com

sondakikakibris.com
